zed ssh://spiffy-root@192.168.1.9:/var/www/starter
You are now editing /var/www/starter directly on 192.168.1.9 ; the screenshot shows the remote-project indicator, the project tree, and Git branch main .[Attachment]
What it enabled
• Direct remote saves: Saving in Zed writes the real file on .9 , as spiffy-root ; no SCP/rsync/upload step.
• Correct project permissions: New and edited files use the same SSH identity that already has access, greatly reducing ownership-related “fake bugs.”
• Real Git context: Zed sees the repository on the server: branch ( main ), changed files, diffs, staging, commits, history, branch switching, and Git commands all operate on the actual .9 repository.
• Real terminal context: Zed’s terminal opens on .9 inside the project directory. Commands like git status , PHP commands, logs, and project scripts run where the bridge runs.
• Actual bridge testing: You edit the same files your local web server/PHP stack serves—no local-versus-server behavior mismatch.
• Remote file search/navigation: Find-in-project, rename/move, outline/symbol indexing where supported, and the file tree all operate against /var/www/starter .
• Remote language tooling: If you eventually install a PHP language server or formatter on .9 , Zed can run it there against the real project. You do not need to do that now.[zed +1]
What did *not* change
• It did not install Node, Composer, Prettier, ESLint, or Intelephense on .9 .
• It did not change your PHP bridge, Git branch, or project code merely by connecting.
• It did not expose the server to the internet; you are connecting across your existing local network over SSH.
• Zed installed/uses its own small remote helper under the SSH user’s account so the Mac UI can communicate with the remote project.[zed]
Useful next checks
Open Zed’s terminal in this remote project and run:
zpwd
whoami
git status
git branch --show-current
You should see approximately:
/var/www/starter
spiffy-root
main
That confirms the three things you care about: right directory, right user, right Git checkout.
